Sub-specialties & Special Interest Groups
Your pre-radiology background is often an asset when it comes to the various types of imaging. An orthopaedic surgeon will often excel in MSK radiology - being used to the various types of MRI scans, as well as having a good understanding of the surgical procedures when it comes to post-operative imaging.
Similarly, a general surgeon will have a good understanding of certain types of abdominal imaging and bowel surgery. However, despite these assets, one often finds that the special interest group chosen by a radiology registrar is different from the one they had in mind when they started radiology. This demonstrates the beauty of the specialty - and just how interesting it really is!
Some of the major areas of special interest are:
- Paediatric radiology
- Musculoskeletal (MSK)
- Vascular
- Neuroradiology
- Head and neck
- Gastrointestinal
- Genitourinary
- Oncology
- Cardiac
- Chest
- Breast
- Radionuclide radiology
Specialist Interest Groups
Specialist Interest Groups (SIGs) are independent organisations which have been affiliated to the College through a Memorandum of Understanding. They provide us with advice and expertise in areas of practice and contribute to relevant projects or pieces of work, including responses to consultation documents issued by other bodies. We organise and support an annual SIG liaison meeting.
