RCR statement on physician associates

Following Faculty Board on 2 November, the RCR has released the following statement regarding physician associates:

“The context of physician associates (PAs) is complex and nuanced. However, we are clear that the current proposal for a 7-digit GMC registration number for PAs needs to be reconsidered; it would be confusing, challenging and could impact patient care. We have alerted the GMC to our concerns and will continue to make the case for a different approach.

“We need capacity in workforce but it is essential that trainees are not compromised either in training or recruitment through the employment of PAs. We will continue to contact Trusts where we feel that these red lines are being crossed and will continue to work to ensure physician associates can support radiology and oncology departments effectively.”
