RCR statement on cover for intravenous contrast administration in Community Diagnostic Hubs
The RCR fully supports the ongoing establishment of Community Diagnostic Hubs (CDHs) and recognises that these will play a major role in the delivery of UK imaging services in the future.
A procedure likely to be widespread at CDHs is the administration of intravenous contrast injections, which are used to enhance imaging examinations.
Currently, the RCR signposts clinicians to the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologist’s Iodinated Contrast Guidelines. These guidelines remain current, however, in light of potentially varied staffing rotas and operating hours of CDHs, we are issuing the clarification below regarding which individuals may cover the injection of intravenous contrast for UK practice:
An individual trained in recognising and treating severe contrast reactions, including anaphylaxis and extravasation, must be immediately available in the department where intravenous contrast is administered. This may be a radiologist, other medical staff from differing disciplines or another healthcare professional (for example, a radiographer or nurse). A written departmental protocol should also be available at each CDH.
